The Band

The Legend of the Rudi Brabec Band

High in the Bavarian-style mountains in the country of Bierstein lies the little village of Kuhstadt, where the legendary story of the Rudi Brabec Band began.

Rudi Brabec, the band's fearless leader, was born with an accordion practically in his hands. Having taken up the instrument as a young child, Rudi quickly demonstrated a remarkable musical talent. But the accordion wasn't Rudi's only musical gift. He was also an accomplished player of the Alpenhorn.

According to local legend, young Rudi would venture far into the rolling hills surrounding Kuhstadt, using his mighty horn to communicate with his beloved Mutti and Papa back home. Whether he was announcing his whereabouts, signalling that supper was ready, or simply letting his parents know he was still alive.

Some say that even today, a particularly enthusiastic blast from Rudi's horn can be heard somewhere in the Canadian Rockies.

Enter Dieter

Rudi's life would change forever when he met Dieter in elementary school. Dieter was a little older, a little louder, and possessed an opinion on just about everything. The two became fast friends, united by a shared love of polka music. The oldest member of the band, Dieter has always enjoyed being heard—whether he's playing guitar , telling a questionable joke, or reminding Rudi that, despite all evidence to the contrary, he is clearly the most talented member of the group. Teasing Rudi became something of a lifelong hobby, and Rudi, for his part, learned that the best way to deal with Dieter was occasionally to play louder than him.

Then there was Max!

Max was another school friend, a quiet, thoughtful fellow who rarely said much. In fact, some villagers claimed they had known Max for years before ever hearing him utter a complete sentence. But Max had a way of expressing himself. He liked hitting things. Pots, pans, tabletops, wooden fences etc. Recognizing both an opportunity and a potential public safety concern, Rudi and Dieter suggested that Max try playing the drums. It turned out to be a stroke of genius. Max took to the drums with absolute abandon, discovering that he could say more with a well-placed snare hit and a thunderous bass drum than most people could manage in an entire afternoon of conversation. At last, the quietest fellow in Kuhstadt had found his voice and the band was complete!

A Band of “Brothers”

Soon, their energetic performances made them local celebrities, and invitations to harvest festivals and celebrations throughout Bierstein came pouring in. Before long, the boys were touring the country and winning over audiences wherever they played.

Eventually, their adventures brought them to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where their unique blend of traditional Oktoberfest music, modern energy, and outrageous humour found a welcoming home. For over a decade, the Rudi Brabec Band has been entertaining audiences and bringing a little Bavarian spirit to Canada.

They may have left Kuhstadt behind, but wherever this “band of brothers” perform the spirit of Bierstein lives on.

Prosit!
